Named after the owner's dog who barks in the vineyard, Barking Hedge is a fantastic value in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. First of all, it's from Marlborough. Second, it comes from cooler, higher elevations of the Wairau River Valley, and third, it is single-vineyard wine. Some of the cheaper NZ Blancs are a collection of regional juice that trade on the Marlborough designation, not Barking Hedge—nothing but 100% prime fruit from Crighton Estate here.
TASTING NOTES: Medium-bodied, dry. Drier than most Marlborough SB but still regionally flavored with quince and kiwi on the nose, and a palate of citrus, minerals, and yellow fruit. Herbs, grapefruit, and stones on the finish make it drink more like Loire Valley Sauvignon.
FOOD PAIRING: broiled fish and dill butter, asparagus, ceviche, and poached chicken.
