JH Meyer Signature wines is a small boutique wine producer, producing hand crafted natural wines from small plots off vineyards in the south coast region of South Africa.
Inspired by many travels to New Zealand, California and Burgundy, Johan has been scouting vineyards to produce the best South Africa can offer, giving honor to the world’s most elite varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The company was establishing in 2011, with 2012 seeing the first bottling from this artistic wines. Driven by nature and “terroir” the wines show unique flavors and characteristics of the land it was grown on.
All the grapes are grown from one single vineyard in the Outeniqua Mountains, planted in 1997, and dry farmed. Soils are mostly clay loam at an altitude of 880 metres above sea level, with south-east facing slopes. As of 2013 only organic farming methods are used. All grapes were handpicked in the early morning during cooler weather, placed into lug boxes (smaller quantities mean reduced compaction and damage to the fruit) and then moved to cellar. 70% of the grapes undergo carbonic maceration. The rest are fermented with 100% whole bunch, with one punch down daily. The wine ferments at a warm 30 degrees Celsius for about 10 days and then spends another 22 days on the skins for tannin integration. Ageing lasts 11 months on the gross lees, in old French oak, after which the wine is blended and bottled without fining or filtering.

TASTING NOTES: This wine is full of brooding, savoury notes. An attractive earthy, smoky aroma, with sandalwood and grated dark chocolate to add depth. The fruit on the palate is full of dark cherries, ripe blueberries and early autumn blackberries. Will benefit from a good few years of laying down, as well as being beautiful now - if you have the patience, hide a few bottles away and enjoy the tertiary character developing over the next 5 - 7 years.
