(ThereAfter) Escher Vineyard, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon blend
(ThereAfter) Escher Vineyard, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon blend
Single vineyard site in the Mayacamas mountains, overlooking the valley facing North East. Regeneratively farmed by Accenti with no tilling, cover crops, and very minimal spraying of sulfur and no copper sprays. 20 rows of vines, predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, with a few rows each of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot on Montara series clay loam. Harvested earlier than most to capture vibrant fruit aromatics and preserve natural acidity. A portion of whole bunch - up to 1/4 of the harvest - is included, the remainder are destemmed but not crushed. Native yeast fermentation in small lot bins. Aging in barrel up to 1/3 new depending on the vintage. Unfined, unfiltered, with minimal sulfur additions made as necessary after fermentation.
James and Lorenza Allen founded Accenti with a vision to represent the best terroirs of Northern California with a perspective all their own. Lorenza is originally from Piedmont in Italy and had worked in multiple wineries in Portugal, Australia and California. James hails from the mid-West of the US and had worked in Germany as well as at Faila in California. Combining their personal and professional histories, they started Accenti in 2019. A central part of their endeavor is regeneratively farming 5 'back garden' vineyards in the Napa Valley. They have worked out a system whereby they make all the farming decisions and do all the farming themselves in return for the resulting fruit. They supplement their Napa Valley wines with grapes purchased from responsibly farmed vineyards across Northern California.
Winemaking occurs in Santa Rosa out of a shared facility. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts for all wines. They employ a number of fermentation vessels including old barrels, bins, and stainless steel tanks. All of the whites are whole bunch pressed while the reds are not crushed and contain a varying portion of stems. Aging occurs in a combination of old barrels and tank, with some newer French oak used on their Napa Valley wines to help 'frame' the fruit. A harkening back to the golden days of California winemaking, their wines are built on natural acidity, bright fruit flavors, and lower alcohol levels.
