The idea behind TWISTED is the creation of a pleasant, easy drinking red wine, keeping complexity, mineral notes and great depth, like the classic Douro wines.

A typical Douro blend, but aged mostly in stainless steel (20% French oak for 12 months). Even Niepoort’s Twisted has some vine age, as its blend includes vines aged 10-40 years. The idea behind Twisted is the creation of a pleasant, easy drinking red wine keeping complexity, mineral notes and great depth like the classic Douro wines. Illustration by American animator Bill Plympton.

Niepoort’s story begins in 1842 when Dutchman Eduard Kebe established the firm in the famed Douro wine-making region of Portugal. When he passed away in 1848, the business was left in the capable hands of his business partner, F. M. Van der Niepoort. Over 150 years later as the 5th generation to do so, Dirk Niepoort continues to make fortified wines using the same methods as his ancestors. Dirk is a true Renaissance man, effortlessly embracing the history and tradition of Port while also leading the way as one of its most innovative and creative winemakers. This could be celebrated in no better way than by the unrivaled collection of Colheitas released from Niepoort's cellars as well as by the groundbreaking, still table wines he has created from forgotten old vines. From 80+ year old vines of Tinta Amarela and Touriga Francesa that produce only 1/2 ton per acre in many vintages, the Redoma embodies the heritage and inherent wealth of Portugal's vineyards and the innovative, passionate skills of Dirk Niepoort. These exciting new wines are born from the same pioneering attitude of Dirk's predecessors that bestowed Niepoort with one of the most exhilarating and expansive cellars of Colheita ever amassed.

VILIFICATION: 2015 was a superb year in the vineyard with good levels of rainfall in the winter and a relatively dry growing season, hence the low level of precipitation meant disease incidence was low; a relatively early veraison in July led to an early harvest in September before the onset of rain in the middle of the month, fruit was in optimum condition and picked well before the rain, in order to maintain the high levels of acidity, balance and freshness in the wines.

The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness, with high acidity contents and balanced sugar levels. After selection, the fruit was 100% destemmed and the fermentation took place in stainless steel vats with 8 to 15 days of skin maceration. 15% of the wine was aged in used French oak barrels for 12 months.

TASTING NOTES: Medium brick red colour, with a wonderful fresh, active aroma, and a clean precise aroma of dark cherries with some floral undertones and a spicy, balsamic rustic profile. On the palate, it is more robust than the previous year, with a markedly rustic profile. Once again a superb drinkability owing to its balance and elegance, this wine very much exhibits the uncomplicated style that we set out to achieve.
