Blatina will quickly become a new fan favorite in the portfolio. It is a grape that creates medium-bodied reds with juicy acidity, and distinctive mineral flavors and tends to be low in alcohol and retain an exceptionally fantastic level of natural acidity for grapes grown in this part of the world. The wines often have very soft, pretty, and elegant flavors, and are sometimes described as a cross between Sangiovese and Gamay.
The varietal is unique because it is a female flowering plant, meaning it needs another variety to pollinate and produce grapes. For this reason, almost all Blatina vineyards are planted with Alicante Bouchet or other local varietals and then harvested (and often co-fermented!) together as a field blend. Škegro’s Blatina, for example, is done so with Alicante Bouchet and Trnjak (local varietal) with 8-10 days skin maceration in open plastic vats and stainless steel.
